To begin with, it should be mentioned that all beaches in Koh Samui are beautiful. They all look attractive when the weather is nice, unfortunately our photos were taken on a rainy day. Anyway, we have chosen the top 5 best Samui beaches for you.
This is the most popular tourist beach with a well-developed infrastructure. There are dozens of shops and souvenir shops, beach entertainments such as banana riding, parasailing, jet skiing and water skiing. You can also try a fairly new water attraction - flyboarding. The beach is crowded and noisy and promises a lot of fun during the high season and is much calmer during the low season. Because of the wide 3 km long coastline there is enough space for everyone even in the peak season. All popular discos and bars of Koh Samui are situated here. The beach is good for swimming if not for the big number of jet skis, speed boats and banana rides. Another peculiarity of this beach is that its guests can watch planes taking off from Koh Samui airport which is not far away from here. You can get to Chaweng Beach by tuk-tuk, motorbike or taxi.
Long and wide coastline, white sand, comfortable entrance to the water with clean even seabottom, in our opinion, make Lamai the best place for a beach holiday. If compared to Chaweng Beach, Lamai is less crowded. It has a couple of restaurants where you can get a snack or a full meal or just enjoy a marvellous seaview with a cup of coffee in your hands. As for entertainments, you can do kayaking, go jet skiing and get Thai massage here.
You can get to Lamai Beach by taxi or by tuk-tuk.
Crystal Bay is a small cozy beach surrounded with rocks. We can not say that the beach is suitable for swimming, especially with kids. It is unbelievably picturesque and it is absolutely worth visiting during sunsets which are fascinating here. At the seaside there is Crystal Bay restaurant with beautiful live saxophone music in the evenings. This is a nice place for a romantic evening.
You can get to Crystal Bay Beach by taxi or tuk-tuk. If you travel by a public tuk-tuk you need Crystal Bay bus stop from where you will have to walk about 200 m off the road.
Thongson Bay is somehow similar to Crystal Bay. It is also small and surrounded with rocks. It attracts with its cozy atmosphere and view over Koh Phangan. Here you can do kayaking, have Thai massage (prices for massage start from 400 THB here which is higher than in the city) and have a nice time in a Thai restaurant. You can get to Thongson Bay Beach only by taxi. When finding your way to this beach, look for the Melta hotel which will show you the direction.
Choengmon Beach has a wide coastline. There aren’t usually many tourists here. If you are staying at Choengmon bungalows, you can use sun chairs and umbrellas for free. If you are visiting the beach randomly, you will have to get something from a nearby bar. Tides are very noticeable here and it may not be good for swimming.
This is a good place for a holiday with kids. As for entertainments here you can only find Thai massage and a Thai cafe at the seaside. You can get to Choengmon Beach only by taxi or motorbike. Be careful as the road leading to the beach is steep with abrupt turnings.
There are some more beautiful beaches in Koh Samui, for example, Maenam and Bangrak. In our opinion, they are not very good for swimming because of the nearby piers.
At Bangrak Beach there is a pier of several companies which organize sea tours. Dozens of speed boats travel from here to Koh Phangan, Ang Thong and Koh Tao every day. The beach is quite nice on the whole. Right at the seaside you can rent a bungalow from 1000 THB per a night. In the evening you can have a good time here and admire the sunset sitting on one of the comfortable beach pouffes.
